Alessandra Risi (Lima, b.1997), develops paintings as a mechanism of communication. Starting from personal and familiar archives, such as a collection of stamps, botanical books from the 20th century and other images from scientific research trips. This ambivalent process of crossing contamination and transformation lies at the core of artist Alessandra Risi's work. Through multiple sensory stimuli mediated by painting, Risi transports us to a space that forms a laboratory of explorations rich in imaginaries and complex questions about the relationship between history, dominant Western narratives in colonized territories, nature and geography on a local, personal and domestic scale. The works show representations of various wild plants and final fragmented landscapes (matchboxes) whose origin can be related to the colonial dissemination of species and their incorporation into our imaginary of the natural landscape. Risi reproduces oil paintings in various formats and supports (fabrics, matchboxes and majolica). She does this by incorporating her Peruvian background approach into her works through intense, saturated colors and marked contrasts, which are transferred to the support through gestural and expressive brushstrokes, she generating a wide spectrum forms between abstract and figurative. In addition, most of the pieces are placed in the space without a frame, establishing a formal relationship with the fluidity and textures of what is represented. She received her BA in Visual Arts at the university Nuova Academia Di Belle Arti in Milano (2021), she is currently studying the MA in Painting at Royal College of Art (2025). Her work has been exhibited internationally including South Korea (2020), Otto Zoo gallery, Milano (2021), the Menorca Art residency (2023), Addition Gallery, Vancouver (2023) an her recent show in Queen Alexandra House in London.
Through painting I seek a constant exercise of questioning in the environments that surround me, painting is a tool to communicate and decontextualize my ideas. Through color and the line a movement is understood in the objects as well as in the different planes. The tones are fundamental to give strength to each idea, appear according to each situation and they enhance the idea as well as the non human forms. Inside the painting there are two readings, the object and the situation and a mysterious and incomprehensible part, this makes the viewer read and interpretate. Painting is a constant dialogue with the space that surrounds, a constant reflection. I use painting as a tool, the display is related to the image, I can have paintings on large format and non stretched canvas (2 meters) giving the idea of beings like organic plants. While I can have paintings in matchboxes (3cm), playing with the idea of a weapon with two sides, turning on memory and fragmented landscapes. On the other hand, I present my work in non-stretched canvas saturating the idea of nature and the two sides of the story. In a process of appropriation of elements and problems, I alter the historical order, generating a reading of the objects that connect my roots as a Latin American woman with European ancestors. Research materials such as books and stamps are key to rethinking colonial and capital systems in order to understand nature as a means of power and at the same time vulnerable.
